Stadium Support Column Repairs

LAN Concrete Technology was awarded the contract to repair and reinforce the existing concrete supports for the bleachers at Alumni Stadium in Jasper, IN. The project consisted of providing concrete encasement on the 58 concrete supports for the stadiums bleachers. Due to access issues and a tight construction schedule, this was not going to be an easy task. LAN recognized that the project would be a good candidate for a carbon fiber repair and reached out to Rhino Carbon Fiber to discuss possible solutions.

As you can see in the pictures below, the supports were badly deteriorated and in need of repair. The plans called for the supports to be excavated 1′ below grade, so that 6″ of reinforced concrete encasement could be installed around each support. By using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), LAN could eliminate the access issues and more easily meet the project schedule.

By working with Rhino Carbon Fiber, LAN was able to use CFRP to meet the project needs. Rhino’s 560 GSM Bidirectional Carbon Fiber was used to wrap the supports to strengthen them as well as provide confining strength to the repairs that were made. After the CFRP installation, the supports were coated to provide UV protection as well as an aesthetically pleasing finish to the repairs.

By using CFRP, the contractor was able to eliminate the access issues related to getting concrete to each of the support locations, eliminated spoils removal issues, concrete wash-out pits, and any of the other complications related to the original repair method.
